The Area

Santa Catarina is part of a much-admired rustic area in the hills North of Faro, in the unspoiled, eastern Algarve. A small village situated between the two old Portuguese towns of Tavira and Sao Bras de Alportel. Many say that the quality of life surpasses that of the coast by far. The cost of living is dramatically lower yet beaches, golf and nightlife within driving distance.

The historic Roman fishing town of Tavira harbours supermarkets, banks and sandy beaches just 15 kms away. Further on, the Spanish border is less than an hours drive away. Even a day trip to the Spanish city of Seville, with its orange tree lined cobbled streets, is worth fitting in.

Going west, the small but thriving town of Sao Bras is just 20 minutes drive away where you will find pavement cafes, popular restaurants, supermarkets and a daily produce market.

For a beach day out to the popular resorts, head west to Villamoura, Albufeira and Carvoeiro, to name but a few.

Exploring the countryside closer to home discover the hand-made pottery in Moncarapacho, the Roman ruins of Estói, the thriving market town of Loulé and the waterfront fish market at Olhão.

Don't forget Faro itself, it's not just an airport! This bustling town is the provincial capital of the Algarve. The city was founded by the Moors. The historical Cidade Velha (old town) is worth a visit with its glorious square, Cathedral and museum.
